I love video games.  I love the story lines and the action.  Getting a new game and diving in is always something I look forward to.  What I hate about more and more videos games is sections that are unbelievably hard.  Now, I am no novice to gaming, especially first person shooters.  Am I amazingly great at them?  No, when I play Halo 3 online I still get my ass handed to me by preteens, but on campaign I can beat it on heroic with few issues.  In fact, most of the time I start a new game I like to play on the hard setting.  I like the challenge and feeling that I accomplished something difficult.  Sure I could play through the game on the easiest mode like a lot of people do, but I think that the first time playing the entire game is often the best.  That is why I enjoy a bit of a challenge.  However, I HATE levels that require absolutely perfect marksmanship or timing.  Often these levels combine waves after waves of enemies coupled with an impending time limit.  After about the 10th try I get a little pissed.  I ask myself, “how the hell is this fun?”  Is there a reason that developers have to make nearly impossible levels.  Sure, I could save and come back to it, but then that would be accepting defeat.  After a while, a head ache sets in, the game is no longer fun, but instead it is all about beating the damn developers and their bullshit level.  Alas, after the 20 some odd attempts, I admit defeat and save my game.  I know that if I don’t, the pounding headache and utter hatred for the level will cause me to throw my controller through the TV in an act of sheer stupidity.  You beat me for now, but I will be back, rested, headache free, and ready to kick some ass.

    Sir Jeff,

I understand your stance and frustration completely. However, I do believe that many games have become to soft and easy to play in the past few years. As I remember it, when I was but a wee child, most video games were challenging and for good reason. It took longer to play and beat them, thus we got more bang for our buck.

The Mario games are a great example, as Super Mario 1, especially Level 8, was much harder than each subsequint game released in the series. That having been said, Nintendo has returned to it’s roots with Mario Wii and it has become much more challenging and once again more enjoyable to play.

Not to be outdone though is a game I recently picked up, Demon’s Souls. Albeit very enjoyable to play, with excellent graphics, combat, and architeture, it is a game that requires much attention, patience and concentration while playing otherwise a result of multiple failed attempts and guaranteed. It is sometimes frustrating to the point of, you die and lose everything, that you’ve most certainly got to walk away and come back later.

Thanks for the post, and this is my entry into your Christmas Giveaway if you deem if worthy.

Hey! I think you are right about games being easier. It seems as though there is an imbalance. Rather than being consistently difficult throughout the game, you can skate through and then BAM! here is a level that is going to drive you to madness.

Ah yes, bang for your buck. What the hell happened to that? I couldn’t believe when Halo 3:ODST came out. Every review I read said that it felt like an expansion, not a full game. They beat it in 6 hours! That’s $10 an hour and a whole lotta BS. I guess that is why I usually wait for games to drop in price and then play them on hard. Better bang for the buck.

I was recently thinking the EXACT same things about the Call of Duty: MW2 “Spec Ops” levels. To get 3 stars on just about ANY of them, you need to play with 2 players split-screen or online (angry they don’t have system link for the Spec Ops).

Even midway through the difficulties, it’s hard to even get 1 or 2 stars with two people! Other games are indeed similar, but if they involve real skill then I’m OK with that… Devil May Cry challenges for example.
