A Venture into Old School Solutions…

Taking another look at older ways of doing things is… heresy.  How can I possible call myself a techie and even consider the old school.  Let me explain my journey into the realm of old school techniques.  Coffee, a hobby I have been cultivating over the past year has started me thinking about the older, traditional ways things used to be done.   You see, most of the methods that are used to brew coffee are very traditional and require no electricity.  Methods such as the manual drip, french press, Turkish, and vacuum pot are old school compared to today’s machines that grind the beans, brew coffee, and damn near pour a cup for you, all on a timer.  But the older ways are infinitely better than the new.  Not to mention what happens when you use beans you roasted personally.  The results are unbelievable.

More recently I have been toying around with some fountain pens. I don’t really remember what got me so interested in them, but I do like the fact that it is something that lasts for years. With care, there is no reason why I cannot pass these tools onto my children or grand children. The idea that something is made to last and users can repair and modify their own equipment is something that I really like. Today even I came across an article about shaving with a double edge safety razor and how it can transform the shaving experience. This all got me thinking…

Maybe new technology or innovations isn’t the answer, maybe our grandparents got it right the first time…

Granted this type of thinking applies to certain things. We wouldn’t consider a Commodore 64 superior to my MacBook or even a cell phone from 10 years ago better than today’s models. But there are somethings in this world that do not need perfecting. Past generations were extremely smart and knew how to build things that last. Maybe it is time that our generation take notice and see where in our life older techniques or tools can provide a better, more personal experience that can be passed onto future generations.

It is so. You may think a technology guy like myself would have some new Android phone but, I am using a dumb phone, specifically, a Nokia 6301 lol.

      Happy Holidays,

Nice perspective. I have to say, even right now my Nintendo 64 still works, but my 360 already got RROD’ed. I mean seriously!
